WHO IS GOD
The word god is derived from the Hebrews word "elohim" and means mighty or powerful one. Since there are many mighty ones, both in heaven and on earth, it is evident that gods are many. But the Almighty Father is greater than all of them hence He is known as "the God of gods and Lord of lords" or the "Almighty God" (Deuteronomy 10:17; 1st Corinthians 8:5,6). The holy name of God Almighty is JEHOVAH, a Hebrews word which means self-existing One or One Who lives of Himself; uncreated. (Exodus 6:3; Psalm 83:18) He lives from everlasting to everlasting according to Psalm 90 verse 2. (See also Psalm 93:2; 1 Timothy 6: 15,16; etc.)
His Titles: Jehovah, the Great Architect of the universe and the source of life, who is Lord of heaven and earth, has other names and titles by which He is distinguished form other gods. These include Ancient of Days (Daniel 7:9) I am (Exodus 3:14) Rock (Deuteronomy 10: 17) Jealous (Exodus 34:14) Holy and Reverend (Psalm 111:9; Isaiah 57:15) ; etc.
Although man does not know everything about God (Job 36:26) yet God has revealed a lot about himself to enable us understand him. God can only be understood by revelation. Moses told the Jews: "The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us, that we may do all the words of this law." - Deuteronomy 29:29.
Job the prophet stated that the inspiration of the Almighty giveth men understanding (Job 32:8). And while on earth, Jesus Christ declared "no man knoweth the father but the son and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal Him." Matthew 11:27.
His Personality: God Almighty is a Spirit Person of the highest order. (John 4:24). St. Paul called Him the "Father of (all) Spirits". (Hebrews 12:9) But spirit beings have bodies.
St. Paul explained that "there is a natural body and there is a spiritual body." (1st Corinthians 15:44;Job 4:12-16.) And while on earth, Jesus Christ confirmed that God Almighty has form and shape. (John 5:37). The Almighty God, as well as all spirits have the shape or appearance of a man. But the bodies of spirit beings, one must be quick to say, are not human, or earthly but celestial or heavenly, hence St. Paul's declaration that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God in heaven. -1st Corinthians 15: 49-50
Jehovah created all things perfect (Deuteronomy 32:4). He dwells in the heaven of heavens, the farthermost part of heaven known as Mount Zion. (Psalm 11:4; 48:2; Ephesians 4:10.
Jehovah's Creation: The beginning of Jehovah's creation was the Logos, or Word in English, meaning Spokesman or Interpreter for God Almighty.
Hence Christ's statement that he is the beginning of the creation of God. ( Revelation 3:14; Proverbs 8:22-30) He, as Mechizedek, "Priest of God Most High" appeared to Abraham when he was returning from the slaughter of the kings and Abraham, recognizing his position, gave him tithes of all his spoils
Jehovah empowered Jesus Christ to be His creative agent. Through Jesus Christ all things perfect in heaven and on earth were made. ( Colossians 1:15-20; Psalm 33:6,9; John 1:1-3,10,14) It was when he came to this earth that he was known as Jesus Christ. - Matthew 1:21; Luke 1:31,32.
Several prophets were privileged to see God in vision and they described Him as a person with brightness all around Him. One of them was Micaiah the prophet who declared; "Therefore hear the word of the Lord; I saw the LORD sitting upon his throne, and all the host of heaven standing on his right hand and on his left." (2 Chronicles 18:18) In the words of the prophet Daniel, "I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days (God Almighty) did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire" (Daniel 7:9). And David the sweet psalmist of Israel stated: "Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise? He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? He that formed the eye, shall he not see?" (Psalm 94:8-9) Ezekiel the prophet in describing the vision of God, said he saw sitting upon the throne "the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it" and that "from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about." He concluded by saying that "This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD" - Ezekiel 1:26-28; See also Acts 7:56 ;etc)
Since God created man in His own image and likeness (Genesis 1:26,27) it goes without saying that God Almighty has the shape or appearance of a person. Image means the copy of the original. It is because God has the shape of a man that Apostle John stated " as he is, so are we in this world." (1 John 4:17). While James says men are made " after the similitude of God." - James 3:9.
St. Paul told the Athenians:" Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the God-head is like unto gold, or silver, or stone graven by art and man's device." - Acts 17:28-29.
To say that God Almighty is a person does not mean that He is like ordinary human beings. He has the appearance of a man, but being a spirit person, He has a celestial body, not having blood, flesh and bones. (Luke 24:39; 1st Corinthians 15:50). He is immortal, which means he has life in himself, is not subject to death. He is a Creator, all others are creatures. - 1 Timothy 6:16; John 5:26.
God has four attributes of wisdom, power, justice and love. These are His likeness in man. He used wisdom and power in his creative works (Proverbs 3:19; Jeremiah 10:12). With power alone he destroyed the first world with water saving Noah and His family of seven (Genesis 7:1-24). He has also promised to use this power to destroy all those who, in spite of being given adequate opportunity of knowing the truth, prefer to follow the lies and wicked practices of the devil and his agents. - Psalm 145:20; Zephaniah 1:14-18; 2 Thessalonians 2:8-10; Matthew 24:21.
With Justice he sentenced Adam to death for violating his perfect law in the garden of Eden. (Genesis 2:15-17;3:1-7, 16-19). With love he sent Jesus Christ into this evil world to die for the sins of men. (John 3:16). The qualities of wisdom, power, justice and love given to man by God makes man higher than the animals. - Psalm 49:20.
The knowledge of God Almighty and His son Jesus Christ are imperative for salvation. Speaking through the prophet Jeremiah, God Almighty stated: "Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might. Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee. But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation. Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens." (Jeremiah 10: 6,7,10,11) And what is more, Jesus Christ stated: "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." - John 17: 3.
